What is a Wi-Fi site survey?
A Wi-Fi site survey is an assessment used to plan or validate wireless network coverage and capacity in a physical environment. It considers building materials, access-point locations, radio-frequency conditions, client devices, and the applications people need to use.
A survey should answer defined design questions. A coverage map without the assumptions, device needs, and acceptance criteria is not enough to determine whether the network is fit for a particular workplace.
Three common survey approaches
Survey types can be combined or scoped differently depending on whether a network is being designed, installed, or investigated:
- Predictive survey: modeling software estimates RF coverage using floor plans, materials, proposed access points, and design assumptions.
- Onsite (active or passive) survey: measurements at the location help assess existing RF conditions, coverage, channel use, and interference.
- Validation survey: after deployment, measurements check the installed network against project requirements and identify gaps that merit follow-up.
Coverage is only one part of the design
Signal strength is useful, but it does not by itself establish a good user experience. Channel utilization, co-channel interference, noise, roaming behavior, access-point capacity, and client-device capabilities also matter. A design for a low-density office may not suit a warehouse, clinic, or high-density meeting area.
Requirements should identify the applications, device mix, roaming expectations, building use, and areas that need service. Those inputs inform access-point placement, radio settings, and the thresholds used to evaluate the deployment.
When should a business request a survey?
A survey can be useful before a new installation, during a renovation, after a change in building use, when adding wireless-dependent devices, or when users report persistent coverage or performance problems. It can also help distinguish an RF issue from a wired uplink, configuration, client, or application issue.
Smarter Solutions offers Ekahau survey and design capability. The exact methodology and deliverables should be matched to the site and project scope; no survey outcome should be assumed before measurements and analysis.
